Blood and Mysteries in Bulgarian Politics

There is a lot of blood and mysteries in Bulgarian politics. For a couple of days the Balkan country that has recently joined the EU has been jolted by the assassinations of energy company Atomenrgoremont CEO, Borislav Georgiev and the author of books about Bulgarian mafia, Georgi Stoev that happened within one night. The European Commission's reaction was to call on Sofia to take effective measures for cleansing the state's upper echelon of power.  Since Bulgaria's accession to the EU, Brussels has repeatedly criticised Sofia for the scale of corruption and organized crime in the former communist country where dozens of businessmen, mafia bosses and other criminals have been killed in the last few years. As a matter of fact this is a common problem for all former communist countries where for tens of years the politicians have coalesced with business and power structures and these ties are especially obvious in Bulgaria.
